Yoga guide for beginners: How to start with yoga?

You may have been thinking for some time that you would like to start yoga. First of all, the fact that you want to start must be a decision that comes purely from you, regardless of anyone around you. Simply start because you want to and everything else will gradually fall into place. So if you have taken the first steps in your head, that is the beginning of the success of your yoga journey.

Where and with whom to start?

In the beginning, it is better to spend some time attending classes under the guidance of an experienced teacher who will advise you on how to practice properly without causing yourself injury. Each person is different and each person will suit a different style and a different teacher. If you don't find a class that is quite your cup of tea at the first time, keep looking and discover what works for you. The range of yoga studios is diverse and so are the classes and yoga styles.

What style of yoga to choose?

The range of styles is truly diverse, so don't be afraid to try more styles. Yoga is all about the breath, and it doesn't matter if you practice gentle hatha yoga or more dynamic vinyasa. If you're in good physical condition, feel free to try more dynamic styles like power yoga, vinyasa or ashtanga right from the start. If you want to start slowly, try hatha, slow flow, yin, or restorative first.

Your own practice?

Once you have an idea of the basic positions and sequences and how to perform them correctly, don't be afraid to start your own practice. Your own practice can also push you further, and teach you patience and order.

Most people who start yoga think that if they don't perform a pose as well as the yogi on the next mat, they are practicing incorrectly. Try to be mindful of what you are doing and how you are doing it, what muscles are working? Every body is different, accept that and work with what you have. With patience and diligence you will see your body start to adapt easily.

Find the right style: Explore different styles of yoga to find one that suits your goals and preferences. Hatha or beginner-friendly classes are generally a good place to start. 

Set up a space: Create a dedicated space for your practice. It doesn't need to be big or fancy, just a quiet, clutter-free area where you can lay out your mat and move comfortably. 

Begin with basic poses: Start with foundational poses like Mountain Pose, Downward Dog, Child's Pose, and Warrior I. Focus on proper alignment and gradually build up your practice from there.

Start with short sessions: Begin with shorter practice sessions, around 15-20 minutes, and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable and confident.

Seek guidance: Consider taking a beginner's yoga class or working with a qualified instructor who can guide you through the basics and help you develop a safe and effective practice.

Listen to your body: Pay attention to your body's signals and respect its limits. Start slowly and gently, allowing yourself to progress at your own pace.

Practice regularly: Establish a consistent practice by setting aside specific times for yoga. Even a few minutes a day can be beneficial, but aim for more sessions per week to build strength, flexibility, and mindfulness.

Remember that yoga is a journey, and everyone's experience is unique. Be patient with yourself, enjoy the process, and stay open to the physical, mental, and emotional benefits that yoga can provide.
